Glasgow Band Yashin Exclusive Interview

Glasgow is well known for its metal and hardcore scene.  The problem is however, that this conveyor belt scene seems to produce carbon copy bands that lack the potential to break out of the city.  One band which opposes this statement is Yashin , a band who have achieved legendry status on the Glasgow music scene but also stretched their reputation worldwide building a solid and commited fan base.  Yashin have proved time and time again that they can cut it with the best while performing at high profile arenas such as T in the park and the Slamdunk festival plus countless supporting roles.  It was last year however that Yashin stepped up to prove they're more than a support band with their debut self produced album "Put Your Hands Where I Can See Them." , it is only astonishing that this band with such support still remains unsigned!

Despite being on constant tours , lead guitarist Paul was nice enough to answer a few questions for me.

Q.  Yashin , an abstract name.  Where did this come from?
A.  Its the name of legendary Russian goalkeeper, Lev Yashin.  But basically it was my nickname at school.  One day we'll grab a beer and I'll explain!

Q.  Glasgow is renowned for its underground music scene.  How hard is it for a band like yourself to stand out?
A.  So hard!  We still arent there.  We love Glasgow but I always say its the toughest scene in the UK to break, even for Glasgow bands.

Q.  After moving so far in the last year, what do you plan to achieve next?
A.  We're never gong to be the overnight success band, so we will gradually beat the music industry into submission.

Q.  A few years ago you entered Orange Unsigned.  Although you didnt progress very far, you gained the support of Jo Whiley who compared you to the likes of Enter Shikari.  How much did this mean to the band and its publicity?
A.  It's always nice to be complimented but it hasn't gained us anything such as a reputation.  Jo is an influential figure but we haven't had anything thrown our way because of her statement if you know what I mean.

Q.  Do you have any advice to a band in Glasgow starting out?
A.  Take it a step at a time, be tight , be good and when you get a show with Yashin....
Make it a great night !  You will be remembered for doing so.

Q.  Finally what can Yashin fans expect this year?
A.  More hard work.  We haven't done much "high profile" stuff this year but we have done the work that goes unnoticed to some, like tour every-goddamn-where!
